True Happiness

Jarrod Jacobs

I read an article which discussed how one can obtain happiness. The writer said that there are basically two “happiness lies.” They are:

            1) “Happiness comes by getting stuff and going places.”

            2) “Happiness comes by getting rid of stuff and staying small.”

Jesus said, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” (Lk. 12:15). Accumulating goods, or removing goods does not bring happiness!

God wants us to be happy. This is discussed hundreds of times in the Scriptures. He wants people to enjoy life (Ecc. 11:9-10). Happiness, however, is not based upon “stuff”.

The apostle Peter taught us that, “‘Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit; let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.’ Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled” (I Pet. 3:10-14).

Many will waste their lives looking for a “thing” that will bring happiness. God tells us what brings true happiness. Listen to Him and obtain it! Our happiness or lack thereof is determined by whether or not we listen to and obey God’s word! We are not smarter than our Creator.
